Tranexamic Acid for Dark Circles: Does It Really Work?

Tranexamic Acid for Dark Circles: Does It Really Work?

Tranexamic acid has quietly become one of the most talked-about ingredients in professional skincare. Originally developed as a medical treatment to reduce bleeding, its skin-brightening properties have been increasingly recognised — and it's now considered one of the most effective ingredients for treating hyperpigmentation and dark circles.

But does it really work? And does the delivery method matter?

What Is Tranexamic Acid?

Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a synthetic amino acid that was first developed in the 1960s as a treatment for heavy bleeding. Its mechanism — blocking a compound called plasmin — also happens to have a significant effect on melanin production in the skin.

In dermatology, tranexamic acid is used for: - Melasma (hormonal pigmentation) - Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation - Dark circles and periorbital hyperpigmentation - General uneven skin tone and brightening

How Does Tranexamic Acid Reduce Dark Circles?

Dark circles under the eyes have multiple causes — including thin skin, visible blood vessels, pigmentation, and hollowing. Tranexamic acid specifically addresses the pigmentation component.

It works by:

1. **Blocking UV-induced melanin stimulation** — UV exposure triggers melanin production via prostaglandins. Tranexamic acid interrupts this pathway. 2. **Reducing melanocyte activity** — it directly inhibits the activity of cells responsible for producing melanin (pigment) in the skin. 3. **Improving microcirculation** — some research suggests TXA also helps strengthen capillary walls, reducing the appearance of the underlying vasculature that contributes to dark circles.

What the Research Shows

Clinical studies have demonstrated tranexamic acid's effectiveness for hyperpigmentation across multiple delivery methods. A study published in the *Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology* showed significant improvement in melasma with topical tranexamic acid over 12 weeks. Other studies confirm its effectiveness for periorbital pigmentation specifically.

Importantly, research consistently shows that **delivery method significantly affects results**. Topical tranexamic acid applied to the surface of the skin produces measurable but modest improvements. Delivery into the dermis — via microneedling — produces substantially greater results.

Why Topical Products Alone Aren't Enough

The skin around the eyes is some of the thinnest on the body — but it still has a barrier layer that limits how much of any active ingredient can penetrate. Most topical eye creams deliver tranexamic acid to the very surface of the skin.

Melanin-producing cells — melanocytes — sit deeper in the epidermis and dermis. Reaching them effectively requires a delivery method that bypasses the surface barrier.

Tranexamic Acid in Our Eyecon Solution

At Skin Health Practice, tranexamic acid is one of the key active ingredients in our Eyecon Solution — our specialist eye rejuvenation treatment.

It's delivered directly into the periorbital area via precision microneedling, alongside: - **PDRN** — for tissue repair and regeneration - **Exosomes** — to accelerate healing and cellular communication - **Vitamin K1** — to strengthen capillaries and reduce underlying discolouration - **Rutin** — a plant-derived flavonoid that supports capillary integrity

This combination addresses the multiple causes of dark circles simultaneously — pigmentation, capillary fragility, and tissue degeneration — delivering results that topical products cannot achieve.
