How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal works through a process called selective photothermolysis. The laser emits a precise wavelength of light that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. This energy converts to heat, which damages the follicle and inhibits future hair growth — without affecting the surrounding skin. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple sessions are needed to target follicles during their active growth phase (anagen). Over a course of treatments, the hair becomes progressively finer and sparser until regrowth is minimal. At Skin Health Practice, we use two laser wavelengths selected based on your skin tone and hair type: the 755nm Alexandrite laser, which is highly effective for lighter skin tones, and the 1064nm ND YAG laser, which is the gold-standard choice for darker, olive, Asian, and Indian skin tones where other lasers carry a higher risk of pigmentation changes.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for Dark and Asian Skin?

Yes — when the right laser is used. Many people with darker skin tones have been told that laser hair removal is not suitable for them, often because clinics only offer diode or IPL devices that carry a real risk of hyperpigmentation and burns on Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI. At Skin Health Practice, we specialise in treating darker skin tones using the ND YAG 1064nm laser, which has a longer wavelength that bypasses epidermal melanin and targets the follicle directly. This makes it significantly safer for South Asian, East Asian, Middle Eastern, Black, and mixed-heritage clients. We see a high proportion of clients with Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, and African skin tones and have developed extensive expertise in treating these skin types safely and effectively. If you have previously been refused treatment or had a bad experience elsewhere, we encourage you to book a free consultation — results for darker skin types can be outstanding.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

Laser hair removal can be performed on virtually any part of the body where unwanted hair is a concern. Popular treatment areas at our Hounslow clinic include: full legs (upper and lower), underarms, bikini line and Brazilian, full back and shoulders, chest and abdomen, upper lip, chin and jawline, sideburns, full face, arms and hands, neck, and the intimate area. We also treat specialist areas such as the hairline (for shaping), ears, nose, and toes. Whether you want to treat a small area like the upper lip in under 10 minutes, or invest in a full-body package, we can create a treatment plan that fits your goals and budget.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Because laser hair removal only affects hair in the active growth phase, a course of sessions is always required. The exact number depends on the treatment area, your hair colour and density, skin tone, and hormonal factors. As a general guide: underarms and bikini — 6 to 8 sessions; legs — 8 to 10 sessions; face (upper lip, chin) — 8 to 12 sessions; back and chest — 8 to 10 sessions. Sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for body areas, and 4 weeks apart for facial areas where hair cycles are shorter. Most clients see 70–90% permanent hair reduction after completing a full course. A small number of clients with hormonal conditions such as PCOS may require additional maintenance sessions. We review your progress at each visit and adjust the plan as needed.

What Does the Treatment Feel Like?

Most clients describe laser hair removal as a quick, warm snapping sensation — similar to the flick of an elastic band against the skin. The ND YAG laser in particular produces a deep warmth rather than a sharp sting. Treatment times vary: the upper lip takes under 5 minutes, underarms around 10 minutes, half-legs around 20 minutes, and a full back or full legs up to 45 minutes. Our device incorporates a cooling tip to protect the skin surface and minimise discomfort throughout. There is no numbing cream required for most areas, though we can advise on this for more sensitive zones if needed. Immediately after treatment you may notice mild redness or a feeling similar to mild sunburn, which typically settles within 24 to 48 hours.

Preparing for Your Laser Hair Removal Session

To get the best results and protect your skin, please follow these guidelines before each session. Shave the treatment area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment — do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams for at least 4 weeks beforehand, as these remove the hair root that the laser needs to target. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanning products for 4 weeks before treatment. Come to your appointment with clean, product-free skin — no deodorant for underarm treatments, no makeup for facial treatments. Let your practitioner know about any recent changes to medication, particularly anything that increases photosensitivity, such as certain antibiotics or retinoids.

Aftercare and What to Avoid

After your laser session, treat the skin gently. Avoid sun exposure and use SPF 30 or higher on treated areas. Avoid heat — saunas, steam rooms, very hot showers, and intense exercise — for 24 to 48 hours, as the skin will be more sensitive. Do not pick or scratch any redness or temporary scabbing. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to keep skin comfortable. You may notice hairs shedding from the treated area over the 2 to 3 weeks following your session — this is normal and means the laser has been effective. Continue shaving between sessions if needed, but do not wax or thread. Attend each session on schedule for the best results, and inform your practitioner if you have had recent sun exposure or skin reactions.
