Pigmentation Treatment in Hounslow
Skin pigmentation — whether dark spots, melasma, post-acne marks, or general uneven tone — is one of the most common concerns we treat at Skin Health Practice in Hounslow. It affects people of all ages, ethnicities, and skin tones, and can be deeply frustrating to manage. At our clinic, we take a clinical approach to pigmentation: identifying the type and cause, then selecting the most appropriate treatment — from the Cosmelan depigmentation protocol to laser, medical-grade peels, and targeted home-care. We have particular expertise in treating pigmentation in darker skin tones, where the wrong treatment can make the problem significantly worse.

Types of Skin Pigmentation
Not all pigmentation is the same, and the right treatment depends entirely on correctly identifying what type you have. Melasma is a chronic, hormonally driven condition causing symmetrical dark patches, most commonly on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. It is particularly common in women and in people with South Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin, and African skin tones. Melasma is notoriously difficult to treat and prone to relapse — it requires specific protocols (such as Cosmelan) rather than standard laser or peel approaches. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) refers to the dark marks left behind after spots, eczema flares, cuts, or skin trauma have healed. Very common in darker skin tones, PIH can persist for months to years if untreated. Sun damage and age spots (solar lentigines) appear as discrete brown spots, typically on areas of long-term sun exposure such as the face, hands, and décolletage. They tend to have sharp borders and respond well to laser and peel treatment. Freckles are genetic, though they darken with UV exposure. They can be reduced with peels and laser if desired.
Our Pigmentation Treatments
We offer several evidence-based treatments for pigmentation, selected and combined based on the type, depth, and severity of your specific condition. Cosmelan Depigmentation Protocol: The gold standard treatment for melasma and stubborn hyperpigmentation. Cosmelan inhibits tyrosinase — the enzyme responsible for melanin production — at multiple points in the pathway, both fading existing pigmentation and preventing new formation. It includes an in-clinic mask application and a home-care maintenance phase with the Cosmelan 2 cream. Laser Pigmentation Treatment: Medical-grade laser energy targets the melanin in pigmented lesions, causing the dark cells to break apart and be naturally cleared by the body. Particularly effective for sun damage, age spots, and freckles with well-defined borders. Not suitable for all types of melasma without a proper assessment. Medical-Grade Chemical Peels: Targeted peeling agents including azelaic acid, mandelic acid, and mesoestetic professional peels help resurface the skin, accelerate cell turnover, and fade superficial pigmentation. Particularly well-suited for post-acne PIH and mild uneven tone. Microneedling with Brightening Serums: When combined with vitamin C, tranexamic acid, or niacinamide serums infused during treatment, microneedling can improve uneven skin tone and PIH by stimulating skin renewal and enhancing serum penetration.
Pigmentation in Darker Skin — Why Specialist Knowledge Matters
Treating pigmentation in Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI (olive, brown, and dark skin) requires a significantly different approach to treating lighter skin tones. Aggressive laser treatments, high-concentration glycolic peels, and IPL devices can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin — meaning the treatment itself causes new dark marks that can be more persistent than the original problem. This is one of the most common reasons clients come to us having had unsatisfactory or damaging experiences at other clinics. At Skin Health Practice, we assess every client's skin type carefully before recommending any treatment for pigmentation. We use the Cosmelan protocol, azelaic and mandelic acid peels, and where laser is appropriate, we use the correct wavelength settings and always perform a patch test. We have treated many hundreds of clients with Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, East Asian, Middle Eastern, and African skin safely and effectively.
The Importance of Daily SPF
SPF is not optional when treating skin pigmentation — it is the single most important factor in whether your treatment succeeds or fails. UV radiation stimulates melanocytes to produce more melanin, meaning that even brief unprotected sun exposure can undo weeks of treatment progress and trigger new pigmentation. We recommend SPF 50 broad-spectrum sunscreen applied every morning, with reapplication during the day if you are outdoors. We can recommend appropriate SPF products that are suitable for your skin tone — including lightweight, non-white-cast formulas that are comfortable for daily use on darker skin.
Your Pigmentation Treatment Journey
Every pigmentation treatment at Skin Health Practice begins with a thorough consultation. We will assess your pigmentation type, skin tone, medical history, and previous treatments — and be honest with you about which treatments are likely to help, which carry risks for your skin type, and what realistic results look like. Pigmentation treatment is rarely a one-session fix: most conditions require a course of treatments combined with targeted home-care and daily SPF to achieve and maintain results. We review your progress at each appointment and adjust the protocol as your skin responds. Our goal is not just to improve your pigmentation but to give you the knowledge and tools to keep your skin clear long-term.
