Laser Hair Removal for Asian Skin in Hounslow
Laser hair removal for Asian skin requires specialist knowledge and the right technology to deliver safe, effective results. East and South-East Asian skin tones span a wide range of Fitzpatrick types — from lighter tones (type II–III) through to medium-dark (type IV–V) — and the correct laser wavelength and energy settings must be carefully chosen for each individual. At Skin Health Practice in Hounslow, we use both ND YAG (1064nm) and Alexandrite (755nm) lasers, allowing us to match the ideal technology to your specific skin tone and hair type. Our practitioners have treated many hundreds of clients from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai, and other East and South-East Asian backgrounds and understand what safe, excellent results look like for your skin.

Why Asian Skin Requires Specialist Laser Care
Asian skin tones contain more melanin than lighter European skin, which means there is more competition between the melanin in the skin and the melanin in the hair follicle. If the laser settings are not correctly calibrated, the skin can absorb too much energy, leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark marks), blistering, or uneven results. This is why many Asian clients have had poor experiences with clinics using standard diode or IPL devices set for lighter skin tones. Proper treatment of Asian skin requires a practitioner who understands the Fitzpatrick scale in depth, can assess your individual melanin level accurately, and has access to both ND YAG and Alexandrite wavelengths to choose the optimal option for your skin.
Alexandrite vs ND YAG — Which Is Right for You?
The Alexandrite laser (755nm) is highly effective on lighter Asian skin tones (Fitzpatrick types II–III) and is excellent for fine to medium hair. It is fast, efficient, and delivers outstanding results on lighter-toned East Asian skin. For medium to darker Asian skin tones (Fitzpatrick types III–V), the ND YAG laser (1064nm) is the safer choice. Its longer wavelength penetrates more deeply and is absorbed less by surface melanin, allowing it to target the hair follicle directly without risking hyperpigmentation in the overlying skin. Some clients benefit from a combination approach — different wavelengths for different body areas, or a transition from Alexandrite to ND YAG as treatment progresses. Your practitioner will assess your skin tone precisely at consultation and recommend the right approach.
Common Concerns for Asian Clients
One of the most frequent concerns from Asian clients is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — dark marks that appear after treatment when settings are not calibrated correctly. We take this risk seriously and perform a patch test on all new clients before their first full session, using conservative settings and monitoring the skin's response carefully. We also see many clients who are concerned about treating areas with naturally darker skin — such as the bikini area, underarms, and knees — where the contrast between hair and skin is smaller and the risk of pigmentation is higher. These areas require adjusted settings and extra care, which our experienced practitioners are fully equipped to provide.
Treatment Areas and Session Guide
Laser hair removal can be performed on any area of the body where unwanted hair is a concern. Popular areas for Asian clients include: upper lip and chin (hormonal facial hair is very common), full face and sideburns, underarms, arms and hands, bikini line and Brazilian, full legs, and back. Most clients need 6 to 8 sessions for body areas and 8 to 10 for facial hair, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Hormonal hair growth (such as from PCOS) may require additional sessions and ongoing maintenance. We will discuss your specific treatment areas and create a full plan at your consultation.
Before and After Your Treatment
Before each session: shave the treatment area 24 to 48 hours beforehand. Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams for 4 weeks prior. Avoid sun exposure and self-tan for 4 weeks. Come with clean, product-free skin. After treatment: apply SPF 30 or higher to treated areas. Avoid sun exposure, heat (saunas, steam, hot showers), and exercise for 48 hours. Do not use any exfoliating actives (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs) for 48 hours. Hairs will shed from treated areas over 2 to 3 weeks following each session — this is normal and indicates successful treatment.
