Post-Treatment Skincare: How to Maintain and Extend Your Results

Post-Treatment Skincare: How to Maintain and Extend Your Results

Getting a professional skin treatment is an investment — in your time, your skin, and your confidence. The results you see depend not just on the quality of the treatment, but on what you do in the days and weeks that follow.

Here's our clinic-approved guide to post-treatment skincare — what to do, what to avoid, and how to make your results last as long as possible.

The First 48 Hours: Protection is Everything

In the immediate aftermath of any microneedling treatment, your skin is in a heightened state of sensitivity and repair. The micro-channels created during treatment are still open, and the skin's barrier is temporarily compromised.

**Do:** - Apply SPF 50 every time you go outdoors — UV exposure immediately after treatment can cause hyperpigmentation - Use only gentle, fragrance-free products - Keep skin cool and hydrated - Drink plenty of water to support the skin from within

**Avoid:** - Makeup for at least 12–24 hours - Heat — saunas, steam rooms, hot showers, intense exercise - Active ingredients — retinol, vitamin C, AHAs/BHAs, any acids - Touching or picking at the skin

Days 3–7: Supporting the Renewal Process

As the initial redness subsides, your skin is actively producing new collagen and beginning its regenerative process. Your job during this period is to support — not disrupt — that process.

**Skincare routine:** 1. Gentle, pH-balanced cleanser (no foaming or exfoliating cleansers) 2. Hyaluronic acid serum for hydration 3. Simple, nourishing moisturiser — look for ingredients like ceramides, squalane, and peptides 4. SPF 50 (morning only)

Continue to avoid retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids for the full 7 days.

Week 2 Onwards: Reintroducing Active Ingredients

From around day 7–10, you can begin reintroducing your normal active ingredients. We recommend doing this gradually:

- Start with vitamin C (a potent antioxidant that supports collagen production and helps protect results) - Reintroduce retinol at a low concentration after day 14 - Return to exfoliating acids after day 14, using them no more than twice a week

**Ongoing SPF use is non-negotiable.** UV exposure is the single biggest factor in breaking down the collagen that your treatment has stimulated.

What to Use Between Sessions

Between treatment sessions, the following ingredients actively support and extend your results:

- **Niacinamide** — maintains skin barrier integrity and continues brightening between sessions - **Vitamin C** — antioxidant protection and collagen support - **Hyaluronic acid** — maintains hydration levels essential for skin repair - **SPF 50** — protects new collagen from UV degradation - **Peptides** — signal the skin to continue producing collagen and elastin

Lifestyle Factors That Affect Your Results

Your skincare routine is important — but lifestyle factors have an equally significant impact on how long your results last.

- **Sleep:** The skin repairs and regenerates primarily during deep sleep. Aim for 7–9 hours per night. - **Hydration:** Skin cells require adequate water to function optimally. Aim for 1.5–2 litres of water daily. - **Diet:** Antioxidant-rich foods (berries, leafy greens, nuts) protect against the free radical damage that breaks down collagen. - **Smoking:** Significantly accelerates collagen breakdown. If you smoke, reducing or stopping will meaningfully extend your results. - **Stress:** Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which actively breaks down collagen. Regular stress management supports skin health.

When to Book Your Next Session

Most patients complete a course of 3–6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart. After completing your course, maintenance sessions every 3–6 months help sustain your results.

Our practitioners at Skin Health Practice will advise you on the ideal schedule based on your skin and your goals.
